This earthly paradise you’re about to see is located in Pontevedra, a city in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula; more precisely, in Galicia, Spain. It sits in a beautiful valley, and it extends southwards to gorgeous mountains and a river. Its climate is temperate by the Atlantic Ocean and its proximity to the sea and, most importantly, the calming effect of the RIA, or river mouth, make temperatures pleasant for most of the year. The owner of this earthly paradise is Maruxa, who thinks that a gardener’s best teacher is always the “well observed” errors and trials that also make gardening a stimulating and pleasurable experience.

Maruxa’s garden had humble beginnings. It started with just four Gerbera Daisy Bush, and aside from the huge family huerta, or vegetable garden that included most of the terrain, there were few old rose bushes planted by her grandmother and a few old varieties of roses climbing along a fence. Today, everywhere you look you’ll see flowering annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees, but mostly gorgeous roses, such as Charles de Mills and an Old English Climber planted in 1958. Maruxa started her garden imagining, or dreaming, a rose garden. Bits by bits and through many trials, defeats, and some successes, her dream finally became a reality. The main problem her garden faces are mainly rocky soil, acid terrain and large areas exposed to the harsh northeast wind and little water to water in the Galician dry summers.

To defend the roses of the wind, Maruxa planted a hedge of Cupressus, a species of cypress endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, which was an over difficult task and not very gratifying, but it did help in the protection of her rose garden from the inclemency of harsh weather...

In 1888, near his birthplace, Owen Sound, Ontario, the former dry goods merchant, Robert Pim Butchart, began manufacturing Portland cement. By the turn of the century he had become a highly successful pioneer in this burgeoning North American industry. Attracted to the West Coast of Canada by rich limestone deposits vital for cement production, he built a factory at Tod Inlet, on Vancouver Island. There, in 1904, he and his family established their home.

As Mr. Butchart exhausted the limestone in the quarry near their house, his enterprising wife, Jennie, conceived an unprecedented plan for refurbishing the bleak pit. From farmland nearby she requisitioned tons of top soil, had it brought to Tod Inlet by horse and cart, and used it to line the floor of the abandoned quarry. Little by little, under Jennie Butchart's supervision, the abandoned quarry blossomed into this spectacular Sunken Garden.... enjoy!

This lovely garden is located in Austin, Texas, it belongs to Pat, and it's only five years old. Pat's biggest challenge was eradicating an overwhelming overgrowth of Cat's Claw vine -- it had overtaken the whole back yard, growing inside a garden shed and climbing into the tallest trees. Pat spent months trying to pull it all out and get rid of it without using chemicals that might damage the environment. Once the Cat's Claw was gone, Pat was faced with the problem that actually turned into her garden's biggest asset -- the limestone ledge. The back of the house had an exposed floor of solid limestone. This made possible some of the nicer features you'll find in this garden, such as the curved limestone steps and the terraced limestone ledge that meets the deck off the house. But the garden was left without soil, so everything Pat have planted is in soil that has been hauled in or created by her from compost and purchased mixes. She's still creating soil to allow for more plantings, but as you can see, this garden has turned into an enchanted paradise--one of my favorites since I started this blog, and I hope you'd get to enjoy strolling its fairy paths as much as I do...

This end of the garden is heavy on hosta, scarlet impatiens, ferns, Scotch moss and coleus. Coleus Sedona is in the clay pot along with a hosta and an irisine under the arch of a small weeping Japanese maple...

Salvia leucantha in urn next to variegated hibiscus and pink gomphrena

Impatiens, columbine and azaleas bloom happily in this shade garden. The azaleas actually bloom before the Chinese pistache leafs out (the Live Oak is evergreen), but the azalea foliage is grateful for the shady protection from the summer sun.

These plants are self-sown; sometimes they come up where Pat don't particularly want them, but once they get started, you just can't do without them... it seems they'll be the most robust plants if left undisturbed.

Pat built this rock path in the wooded area of her garden in 2005 under a dense live oak tree canopy. The Kimberly Queen ferns are hardy in that area. Groundcover includes lamium White Nancy and creeping thyme. Pat likes the round knot ring on the right hand live oak tree trunk.

Julie's English country garden has been developed gradually over the past 18 years. It was an empty field when Julie designed it and began working the land, and over the years it has become a place of enchantment for everyone who visit. The Flower Garden is the most densely planted and dramatically changing area in the garden. It is based on a color wheel theory and English in planting style. It is a work in progress, as Julie herself puts it, and this year she hopes to improve the Iris Rainbow Garden with much more topiary and include a pond in the Crab Apple tree Garden. A beautiful garden is a work of heart, and beauty blooms in Julie's garden as well as her heart. Enjoy!

This lovely garden is located in the midst of Poland, only a few miles from the capital city of Warsaw. It is a neat little garden, in both the literal and figurative sense, a perfect paradise in which to take a stroll. Every time I visit this lovely garden I travel back in time to Eve in her lovely Garden of Eden. Why, you may ask… this garden is not only a beautiful earthly paradise, its owner’s name is Ewa, which means Eve, and Ewa’s blog, where you can find everything about her garden, is called Ewa in the Garden. Now talk figurative!

Ewa’s garden is only four years old and it is situated in zone 6b. Ewa herself designed and planted her garden with some help from her husband, who, as she herself puts it, couldn't resist her passion for gardening, and could only stood in awe of her achievements and her handiwork.

In Ewa’s garden the organic method has no geographic boundaries. Around the world everyone is talking environmental issues and ‘going green’. And natural organic gardening and landscaping are mayor parts of this garden.

Hidden amongst the lush rain forests of North East of Melbourne, Victoria, is a rare jewel, an enchanted garden where art sculptures wake up at night to stroll through the forest and gardens and pass away hours dancing through the trees with fairies and sprites…

Welcome to The Grotto, a beautiful sanctuary established by the Servite Friars in 1924 as a memorial to Christ's death on the cross, where religious significance blends harmoniously with natural scenic beauty.

The Grotto is a beautiful place; a place for quiet contemplation and inspiration, a place of stillness and a doorway between our world and nature, so heaven may reach deep within us and touch our souls.

Mike and I were not sure what to expect when we set out to find The Grotto, situated in Portland, OR, other than the description of the place sounded alluring. We arrived early that morning, the sun was shining through a galore of trees and rhododendrons of every color, and all around us we could hear nature's music--birds chirping and singing; the voice of a soothing stream nearby.

The Grotto offers a spectacular natural gallery of religious art with more than a hundred gracefully- sculpted statues and shrines nestled along its flower-lined pathways. Amid the natural beauty of this outdoor cathedral, visitors from many lands find inspiration and peace.

The tranquil Marguerite M. Casey Peace Garden begins as a winding, foliage-shaded path that gradually expands to a fully open park-like setting. As one walks from darkness into light, the garden's designis meant to recall the story of our redemption.

The shrine consists of two levels. The lower level built at the base of a towering cliff is the site of the Grotto moss-laden cave itself, 30 feet wide, 30 feet deep and almost 50 feet high with a Carrara marble replica of Michelangelo's Pieta as the focal point. Also on that level is a visitors’ complex and conference center and a lovely chapel. Mike and I arrived in time to visit the Grotto, warm up with some hot coffee in the visitors’ center and check out the chapel with a scattering of other religious: 4 priests and one Servite brother in his religious habit on the altar, and a few nuns.

The upper level is reached by taking an elevator 110 feet upward to the second level where the monastery, the botanical gardens, and the meditation chapel with a glass wall facing the panorama of the Columbia River and snow covered mountains. Mike and I spent several hours wandering the beautifully groomed trails and snapping photos of the exquisite flowers and shrubs (many in full bloom) growing midst towering redwoods.

The solitude of the convent and its surroundings can be felt deep in the soul...

Fountains, reflective pools, waterfalls and statuary provide a harmony of form; materials and design, and stimulate the visual senses, retaining an intimacy with natural surroundings. Although we didn't care for the statues in a way of worship, they were lovely, and I think they add a sense of distinction and timelessness to the place. They create the unexpected; a feeling of disquiet; yet above all else, they tell in expressive form the relationship between the earth and man. The choice is endless: literary or classical, mythological or historical - all garden statuary have their place.

Hundreds of thousands of tourists and pilgrims visit each year The Grotto. Some come to worship and others to enjoy its natural charm. But all linger to share somehow in the quiet serenity of this place.

Like an enchanted garden, the statuary tucked among green foliage provided a harmony of forms, materials and design stimulate the visual senses while reminding us of Biblical scenes. Indeed, arriving at The Grotto, with its botanical gardens, reflecting ponds and over 1100 varieties of plants and trees was like walking in Paradise.

The Grotto is not listed as one of the top “things to see” in Portland, which is perhaps just as well, for without crowds of tourists it remains an oasis of beauty, peace and tranquility midst the city’s busy environs.

Kata and Tamás, are the owners of this "Paradise", situated in Budapest. They live in a village, in the last house of the street running out in the forest. Their garden is at the foot of a hill, and a brook runs behind it. Originally this side of the street was not habited, the peasants living on the other side of the street used these gardens for orchards and vegetable gardens. Kata and Tamas' garden was one of them, too. In 1945, the forest neighboring their garden was cut out, so their garden was very sunny. Half of its soil is sand, but the other half is the fertile deposit of the brook, which produced much when irrigated...

Kata and Tamas' garden lays at the bottom of a hill facing north, it is bordered by a forest on one side and by a stream along its lower side. It's a lovely shaddy garden, much hazier and cooler than the average Hungarian garden. The trees that tolerate dryness here would not necessarily survive in a warm and sunny garden. This grove is the centre of their whole religion. It is regarded as the cradle of the race and the dwelling-place of the supreme God to whom all things are subject and obedient.

Kata explains that from the sixties people began to build houses on this side of their street as well, and this land was sold, too. It went from owner to owner, and from then on it has not been cultivated. And in the meantime the forest grew again, so the garden is flanked on its eastern side by 30-40 meters high trees overshadowing most part of it.

The upper central part of their garden is a large perennial garden. Originally there were peach trees and grasses. However, the trees could not stand the sandy soil, the humidity and the decrease of the sunlight taken up more and more by the quickly growing large hazel tree, so they died out one after the other. And the grass was so weak that they had to completely resew it four times in ten years.

When Kata and Tamas bought his garden in 1996, it was practically a jungle, as consequence of decades of negligence, they could not advance in it more than ten meters. As they decided to create the garden from the very beginning, they have cut out everything and completely cleaned it, except for two Turkish hazel-nut trees, one walnut, and the poplars on our eastern side.

Kata wasn't an experienced gardener when they purchased this land. She lived in a little village until age ten, then her family moved to the downtown area of the capital city. In the village where she crew up there were beautiful orchards, and fruit trees. Her childhood nostalgia helped create this beautiful garden Kata and her husband owns today. Kata loved roses as a child, so now her lovely garden is embellished by many beautiful rose bushes.

They have nearly a hundred rose bush in their garden. They are mostly historical and English roses. In 1996, when Kata and her husband started developing their garden, they didn't have a full notion on how to bread them, so they bought lots of books. One of their first books: Halina Heitz, Roses – How they develop and blossom the best, helped them create their lovely rose garden. This was the first book in which they learned about historical and English roses. They immediately tried to acquire such roses in Hungary, at a time when nurseries and breeders have not even heard about these sorts of roses.

Kata and Tamas wanted a vegetable garden, too. Thus they planted a series of trees of all the fruits available in Hungary, and sewed grass among the trees. Near to the house they planted roses, and behind them, the vegetable garden was created. They thought that in one or two years their garden would be ready, and as in a village one can always find cheap and reliable workforce, there would be no much difficulty with it in the future either. However, these beautiful plans failed for several reasons. By the time when they moved here, the effects of the change of regime of 1989 and the arrival of capitalism affected the village, the traditional peasant gardens were over, and there was no available workman any more here. It also turned out that this garden, overshadowed by the high trees, is not suitable for any agricultural production. And finally as they dedicated themself more and more to gardening, they increasingly learned how to beautify their early paradise.

To Kata and Tamas, the garden has always been a special place to seek and find their Creator. Their garden and forests surrounding it are God's sancturary. They awaken inspiring universal feelings, enter their garden, and the boundaries of the world are forgotten. It may be that some time an immortal pine will be the flag of a united peaceful world.

The gardeners I’m featuring today are 80 and 79 years old. I’ll name them Mr. and Mrs. Eden, for to me (and to everyone else, as a matter of fact, they live in Eden’s Garden.)

Gerald and Edith's garden is located in Southern Manitoba, Canada. This lovely couple have been tending their little Eden for over 60 years. I’m not jesting, or making it sound pretty when I said that they live in Eden’s Garden, aside from been the most majestic garden I've even seen, that’s actually the name of their garden. It’s a fusion of both their names and their garden: Edith (Ede), the "G" of Gerald, and garden: Eden's Garden.

They have one large flower bed that is mostly hostas, and peonies. The yard has been the back drop for three weddings, and the archway was made by a daughter in law, and was used in two of the weddings. Isn't this a lovely place for a wedding?

Mr. and Mrs. Eden don't like statues or garden gnomes! The most you will find in the way of decoration are a few bird houses and fences for climbing plants, and a few chairs and benches for sitting and taking a break from all their work.

In this lovely paradise there are some flowers that tend to spread and take over the garden, so even though you and I would probably be happy to have them, these sweet gardeners consider flowers such as Daisies and Johnny jump ups, weeds. The area where the flower garden is now was a vegetable garden about 40 years ago, later it was a strawberry field until 25 years ago when Mr. and Mrs. Eden began growing gladioli and selling them at a farmers market, where they always sold out immediately upon opening. Then they began to add other types of flowers, each year expanding the size of their garden. Somewhere along the way, they seeded the pathways with grass, making it much nicer and cleaner to walk around.

Mr. Eden’s philosophy is that “if one is good, a dozen is better”...especially when it comes to daylilies! I suppose the pleasure of gardening lies really in the eternally renewed evidences of the determination to live...

For a person who cultivates wisdom or true knowledge, the results are inner peace, and peace is the secret to a long life.

Mr. and Mrs. Eden's philosphy is to live each day as if it were your last, and garden as though you will live forever.

This month we are featuring a beautiful garden from one of our own, Suzanne, at My Rose Cottage Studio, in Northern California. In this landscape you will find Acacias that have a predictable lifespan of 10-15 years, in combination with flowers and beautiful roses that serve Suzanne as an inspiration for her many amazing paintings...

Depicted here (above) is a vase stuffed to overflowing with old garden cabbage roses from her garden against a rosy background; one of Suzanne's paintings. The colors are beautiful.

Roses and trees can do so much to change the physical comfort of the local environment, in Suzanne's garden plants thrive, in both sun and shade.... Suzanne have six rescue kitties, one rescue dog and 3 rescue gold fish, and she is fostering 3 kittens she rescued from a state park and still feeding 9 more that need to be rescued. They all live and play together in her lovely backyard. Suzanne's back yard is a wildlife habitat. She feed the birds and squirrels and whatever else wanders in day or night. Suzanne cannot imagine my life without animals, or a beautiful garden. She believes that every day is a gift and I live her life accordingly to her philosophy. Her garden is a magical, mystical, wonderful place where an abundance of roses, flowers, and statuary mingles which each other, creating an spectacular space to read, relax or just enjoy nature.

This month we are introducing Rosyin’s fabulous rose garden in Australia. Whether it's love, friendship, or desire, the rose has long spoken for us, making it one of the greates and most powerful flowers to ever grace our gardens. Is there another flower on earth that holds us so completely in its power? Indeed, the rose is unique among all the flowers of the world. I'm sure if we could see Rosyin's garden in passing--driving or walking, our eyes would go to it, our spirit would cleave to it, drinking in a brief "ahhh" of desire and admiration.

Rosyin's started gardening eight years ago when she and her family were renting a house with rose bushes after returning to Australia from missionary work in Asia. Because she had to look after those roses, Rosyin started reading books and magazines that helped her learn about the nature of roses. She started trying the methods learned in the books and they worked, so the rest was inevitable: she fell in love with roses ever since.

When Rosyin and her family moved into their new house, she knew she wanted a garden, but she had too many ideas of what she wanted. She had to consider the family and the practicality side of things, plus because of the lack of confidence as she was still an inexperienced gardener, she decided to have lots of lawn (so the kids could could play balls). Her garden is a work-in-progress, there is still scope for more to be done, like the arches which will need climbing roses and some vacant ground, which will be made into more "garden rooms".

Rosyin likes creating "garden rooms" within the garden as they provide places to sit and enjoy a cup of tea and conversation with family and friends and appreciating the roses and their beautiful scents wafting in the air. There are little paths right through the garden. She started mostly with David Austin and Floribunda roses to establish the backdrop and bone for her garden, and every year she adds plenty of seasonal pretty flowers to make her garden more interesting. There is also symmetry in her garden as the two sides match each other, as she was quite a lot into formal garden a few years ago, although she have mixed a bit of cottagy feel to it by making it not so strictly symmetrical in the last two years. As she explained: "The cottagy girl in me couldn't be subdued totally".

This month we are introducing Deb Snelson's garden, in Barboursville, VA. Deb is retired from the workforce, she has a M.S. in geology, and worked as a university instructor and research analyst in GIS and GPS. She currently volunteers in her community as a Master Gardener and as treasurer of a local non-profit organization. The flowers, birds and butterflies featured here are from her beautiful gardens.

Deb Snelson's lovely garden consists of about 14 different planted areas on two acres. Some are island beds, others line my driveway or form a foundation in front of the house. The backyard slopes down to a creek that brings in lots of wildlife. She has left all the original trees and shrubs in the wooded area and primarily created garden beds in the area cleared for house, access and septic drainfield. She created one woodland garden which hosts mostly native plants. she also has a drainage easement across the front of the property and to the side there is a ravine leading to the creek. So she is surrounded by water on three sides. Deb volunteers as a Master Gardener so she does a lot of experimenting with different plants in her gardens.

Deb created her garden by herself with nothing more than a shovel and wheelbarrow. The house was new construction so there was nothing here but dirt when I moved in almost 8 years ago.

My "Secret Garden is actually everyone’s garden. This is a tribute to every nature lover who, like me, hunger for one small place of enchantment to turn to. In my "GARDEN OF THE MONTH" page I will be featuring a new garden every month. It could be your own garden, or it could be anyone's garden. My purpose in creating this space was to have some fun imagining while catching a glimpse of some amazing gardens around the world. So I invite you to let your imagination soar, and as you step into that old door, imagine yourselves entering a forgotten garden, lost within the clutter's of a busy town, enchanted with it's hues of green; a place where the animals are your tour guides and guards, and fairies dwell peacefully together with the wildlife and flora. Please look to your right, and listen to what Eric, Otto, and the rest of the animals and birds have to say about this enchanted place!

For the month of March I'm featuring Brian Valentine's beautiful garden. Brian is a retired PhD Microbiologist living in Worthing South Coast UK. Retirement has enabled Brian to re-kindle his interest in photography. Virtually all the shots he takes are in his lovely garden, he is a keen gardener, and a friend of nature. His garden is a little haven for all sort of vegetation and inarticulate creatures.

Brian's garden is divided in three sections, this is the top section nearest the house. Notice the plant tray on the lawn. He take many of his "fly" pics on this.

Just going into the second pond section... This is Brian's second section looking back to the house with a small pond on the right and large pond out of view on the left. This part of the garden is what Brian calls the "Jungle Section". How beautiful it is! I would love to visit Brian's enchanted jungle one day!

Here is part of the middle section with a small greenhouse and largish pond. Low walls of stone and brick delineate the lovely landscaped terraces that were built to accommodate the loping land and take full advantage of the rolling countryside view.

One of my favourite koi, a cherry blossom Kohaku-doesn't seem to mind the cold. (air temp 3'C water temp 7'C ).

A beautiful bonsai Acers just leafing up. An abundance of Dwarf Rhododendrons enjoy the morning dew, nestling in Brian's garden... like dreamy angels in pinks and reds....

Magnolias and camellias, daphne and quince, hounds tongue and milk maids are all early bloomers that signify the annual awakening of the garden.

An infinitude of nature's little friends dwells in Brian's garden.... they are partly residents to his garden, as they come and go with the breezes as they please, but some of them live there permanently....

If you come to the garden in the early morning, you can see the starlings enjoying a bath.... ... a family of Great Tits nest in a hole in an old apple tree. ...Wood pidgeon collecting nesting material Brian Valentine's garden combines traditional and non-traditional elements to express the feeling of classicism in a uniquely personal way.
